Drawing In Space!

In this assignment, we had to choose 5 groups of objects thinking about 5 things that would fit into those groups. The only limits were You cannot use the frame of the paper to crop an object AND these objects cannot sit on a surface or ground.

Five categories are to the LEFT. Different sketch ideas are to the RIGHT.

After those categories were decided, I had to come up with a few sketches from an item in each category. In the picture above, my sketch ideas are featured on the right. And below is the actual sketches.

Magnify Glass, Beach, Christmas, Bed, Tuna.
Missing,Happy, Nuts, Dreams, Catnip
Question Mark, Daylight, Hats, Night, Mice

I decided to continue the project on sketch #3. I got the best ideas from that sketch and played around with it.

Better Sizing then initial sketch
Better sketch in general, more dynamic then the first few!

After these sketches, I made a final draft pictured below:

I am pleased with the final product! The piece features linear forms with closed shapes, except for the sun’s rays and gesture lines for the stars which add a nice contrast. The composition effectively guides the viewer’s eye to the central question mark or possibly the hat, depending on your perspective – serving as the dominant focal point due to its size and strategic placement. The overlapping elements create a strong visual impact, and the sun might actually be the most dominant feature overall. I love the texture the hat brings, especially with the pom pom appearing fluffy adding depth and interest to the piece. The bottom right corner is particularly satisfying to me. If I were to consider any adjustments, I would tweak the sun for less “open” space. The repitition and scaling of the stars really enhance the sense of depth. Overall, I believe this piece is dynamic and succesful in its use of overlapping, shading, size variation, and thoughtful placement.
