Combined Forms!

The first part of the assignment was to practice making texture with cardboard for the planar form. We had to figure out 10 different textures we could make.

Getting 8 different textures was a difficult task for me. I ended up getting a few more detailed textures and some simplified ones.

After I had to figure out what I wanted to make as my main form. I honestly had no ideas for the longest time. I sketched a few ideas that I didn’t feel connected to.

Although a garage mailbox idea would of been cool, I had no want in making it, i was not interested and I didn’t want to make something to just make it. I ended up seeing a post on tiktok about a cardboard jellyfish and I actually really liked that idea. I stuck with that and made it my own.

These are my intial sketches trying to get the idea of the jellyfish along with making it dynamic.

Here are some progress photos of the jellyfish coming along through cardboard.

These were the only progress photos and the rest are complete with the linear form added. The first two are pictures out on display. The linear form is wire twirled to make seaweed. The tenticles are made of the paper tape which gave it the nice twist. It covers the middle bar making it look like it is really floating.

The three photos above are taking in the photo room a day or two later. The tenticles rolled tighter unfortunatly making it not flow as nicely and the support beam in the middle shows more.

I did end up making a dynamic planar form because the jellyfish is asymmetric. The tenticals are the dominance of the piece and repitition on this piece. There may not be a lot of added texture but the jellyfish is typical smoother. The paper tape is texture that has a smooth and a shiner side to it.

The linear form is dynamic as well since they have different sizes and none of the seaweed is the same. They all have a unique twist and curve to it making it an organic shape. The wire contrasts with the jellyfish itself because it has more curve and the jellyfish tenticles are straightier with the curl look.

The form overall goes well together. The wire goes opposite of the tenticles. With the jellyfish slanted making it appear to be swimming/ moving and the seaweed going straight up outward adds an contrast. I am content with the overall piece. I feel like I could add a lot more wire elements to add more appeal. Also to have variation in the thickness of wire since I only used the thickier one. In conclusion, it meets the requirements of the assignment, but I feel like I could add more if I end up having time.
